I’ve been consistently going over our food budget, but I sat down today and added up what I’ve spent so far for September. Not terrible. But helpful to see what we’ve spent so I can be more mindful at the grocery these next few weeks. I’ve spent the last week or so using things from the pantry and freezer– uncovered a pound of chicken feet and some random chicken bones that I carried home one night in a ziplock bag from dinner at our friends’ house and froze for stock. So I made stock from the feet and bones and onion skins and the stalks of some allium or other that had been in the freezer.
It’s been cold here the past day or two. Finally soup weather again. For dinner last night I heated up some of the chicken broth and poached two eggs in it. We ate it with crusty pieces of bread and lots of fresh black pepper.
